Pöppelmann GmbH & Co. KG is a medium-size company in the plastics processing industry. As part of an initiative, the company is pursuing climate protection and sustainability as part of its corporate goals. The aim of the joint project was to answer the question of how the company can achieve a CO2-neutral power supply for its sites as economically as possible. To this end, E-Bridge developed a coherent overall concept in which grid connection, regulatory framework conditions and the power sourcing strategy were to be addressed in particular.

In collaboration with Pöppelmann, E-Bridge developed specific use cases in relation to the development of own capacities for the generation of renewable energy and the design of the grid connection. The economic viability of these use cases was then assessed on the basis of specific scenarios for price developments over the next few years. In particular, the self-consumption of energy from own renewable energy plants and the influence on grid fees and energy law privileges were analysed. In addition, a sustainable electricity procurement strategy with PPA, forward and spot markets was developed for selected use cases, including a risk analysis. Furthermore, marketing options for surplus electricity production including direct marketing and PPA procurement were analyzed and evaluated.

E-Bridge determined and evaluated the individual cost items, consumption and total costs for selected use cases of self-generation. The results of the evaluation were used to derive specific recommendations for action for Pöppelmann regarding the most viable investment options. In addition, specific recommendations were drawn up for selecting and implementing the most suitable sustainable electricity sourcing strategy, including risk analysis and marketing options for electricity from own generation and PPA procurement.
