New Approaches to Allocating Capacity
The energy transition presents distribution system operators with new challenges: The number of grid connection requests has risen sharply, while available capacities (especially at transformers and switchgear) are increasingly becoming a bottleneck. Standard procedures such as the “first-come, first-served” principle are reaching their limits when allocating grid connection capacity.
What does this mean for distribution system operators?
The Federal Network Agency demands transparency and non-discriminatory procedures in the specific design by network operators.
Industry associations and network operators are relying on flexible, locally adapted models: first-come-first-serve, first-ready-first-serve, redistribution, auctions, tiered models, or hybrid model – each approach has specific advantages and disadvantages.
Prioritization based on economic and grid-beneficial criteria is becoming increasingly important to make optimal use of available capacity and address the growing competition for connections among different applicants with a consistent concept.
Flexible connection agreements and promoting multiple use of grid connection points offer new opportunities but also require new processes and clear communication with all stakeholders.
Our Solution:
E-Bridge Consulting works with network operators to develop innovative, fair, and practical allocation procedures for capacity and supports implementation. We analyze regulatory frameworks, assess national and international best practices, design tailored concepts based on local grid conditions, and assist through implementation and communication with customers and authorities.
