• The cost of green hydrogen has risen significantly in 2025: End customers are paying almost twice the optimised production costs. Transport and operations are the biggest cost drivers – profitability remains the central challenge.
  • The regulatory framework remains complex: Switzerland lacks a cross-sector, legally binding definition of “green hydrogen”. The EU has established clear criteria through RED II/III, but these are not fully adopted in Switzerland. This creates uncertainty regarding the recognition of renewable gases
  • The transformation of the gas network infrastructure is gaining momentum: While decommissioning in Germany will only be possible under the new EU Gas Directive from 2026, it is already a reality in Switzerland. Municipalities are implementing dismantling and district heating expansion, and the draft GasVG will require approved network development plans in the future.
  • Prices and application costs are decisive for the market ramp-up of renewable gases. For reliable planning, a technical approach alone is not enough – an economic perspective is crucial: relative costs and price elasticities indicate when and where additional demand will arise.
