The challenges facing distribution system operators continue to grow. Regulatory requirements, increasing connection volumes and the rising complexity of the energy transition are creating technical, organizational and strategic challenges across the industry. At the same time, many of these issues are remarkably similar across organizational boundaries.
At the Conference of the Netz 2026 Cooperation Platform in Nuremberg, representatives from municipal and local utilities came together to discuss current developments and practical solutions. Key topics included the implementation of new regulatory requirements, managing increasing dynamics in medium-voltage networks, improving transparency and controllability in low-voltage grids, and adapting organizational structures to meet the growing demands of the energy transition.
The Netz Cooperation Platform provides an established framework for addressing these challenges. It promotes the systematic exchange of experience, the joint development of practical solutions, and the pooling of knowledge and resources. The objective is not to tackle challenges in isolation, but to accelerate implementation by working together and sharing proven approaches.

The cooperation platform combines strategic and regulatory expertise with technical implementation know-how, creating significant value for every network operator,” said Vicky Bung, Head of the Netz Cooperation Platform at E-Bridge.
The participating network operators also emphasized the benefits of collaboration. Roland May highlighted the importance of joint solution development and structured knowledge management in order to use resources efficiently and transfer insights into practice more quickly.
Participant feedback was particularly encouraging. Terms such as “exchange,” “collaboration,” “joint solutions,” and “learning from one another” appeared repeatedly in responses, underlining the importance of cooperation for the industry.
Our conclusion: The future viability of municipal distribution system operators will not be determined by technology alone. It depends on the ability to share knowledge, leverage experience and address challenges collectively. The Netz 2026 Cooperation Platform Conference provided compelling evidence of the value that collaboration can create.
