The German data center market is experiencing dynamic growth, driven by trends such as cloud computing and artificial intelligence. At the same time, the rising demand for energy is leading to an increasing number of grid connection requests, which are often met with limited grid capacities. Against this background, Syna GmbH and Amprion GmbH, together with E-Bridge and ef.Ruhr, developed a shared understanding of the planning and regulatory framework in coordination with data center operators. Based on this, the project identified solutions for the efficient creation of grid connection capacities for data centers.

E-Bridge, in collaboration with ef.Ruhr, conducted a multi-stage analysis that began with a detailed description of the existing situation. The project team examined the planning fundamentals and flexibility potentials of both grid and data center operators and evaluated alternative grid connection concepts. A particular focus was placed on the role of flexible connection models (Flexible Connection Agreements, FCAs) and the potential adaptation of technical and regulatory conditions. In close coordination with all stakeholders, the project also derived requirements for industry standards for data centers in the context of grid connections and developed strategic options for grid operators.

The project established a structured understanding of the challenges and options related to connecting large-scale data centers to the grid. It provided concrete proposals for enhancing planning foundations and leveraging flexibility potentials with the goal of efficiently enabling additional grid connection capacities. The results provided Syna GmbH, Amprion GmbH, and other stakeholders with a robust basis for decision-making regarding the future development and implementation of innovative grid connection concepts.
