The existing processes for applying and implementing grid connections for renewable energy and battery storage systems are associated with significant delays due to complex regulatory requirements and rigid procedures. RWE is currently developing co-location projects and is facing challenges in grid connection planning. Flexible Connection Agreements (FCAs) offer a promising opportunity for the more efficient integration of battery storage systems and for increasing grid connection capacities. However, these concepts are not yet widely established and involve both technical and regulatory uncertainties. RWE seeks to critically examine the current status quo, identify congestions, and explore potential areas for optimization.

E-Bridge designed and conducted an interactive workshop to analyse the challenges and opportunities of FCAs and co-location projects. The workshop began by examining the regulatory, technical, and economic frameworks and comparing them with best practices from other markets. This was followed by a discussion of concrete solution approaches to optimize grid connection processes, particularly regarding the standardization of connection procedures and interactions with grid operators. A structured analysis also developed potential measures to accelerate permitting processes. The results of the workshop served as the basis for developing a tailored strategy for implementing FCAs and co-location in RWE’s projects.

Through the workshop and accompanying analyses, RWE gained a better understanding of the opportunities and challenges of FCAs in the context of co-location projects. The measures developed enable a targeted optimization of the grid connection strategy and a faster realization of battery storage projects. Additionally, practical recommendations were formulated to improve cooperation with grid operators and to promote more efficient use of existing infrastructure. This project thus represents an important step toward accelerating grid connections and successfully integrating battery storage systems into the energy system.
