ju:niz Energy is planning a battery storage project with a grid connection capacity of 100 MW. According to the grid connection agreement, the annual feed-in is limited to a maximum of 1,000 hours, while the grid operator already anticipates around 500 curtailment hours. These restrictions significantly impact the project’s economic viability. The aim of the project is to better understand the technical causes of these limitations and to assess their effect on the marketing potential of the storage asset – particularly with regard to so-called Flexible Connection Agreements (FCA), which could enable a more flexible utilization.

E-Bridge is conducting a phased analysis. In the first step, historical redispatch data from the region is evaluated to identify typical congestion patterns and to validate the curtailment duration estimated by the grid operator. Based on this, a projection of future curtailment risks is developed in a second step. This projection takes into account regional grid development plans, expected renewable energy additions, and stochastically modeled feed-in and load profiles. In the final step, an economic assessment is performed by combining the projected curtailment hours with market price time series. E-Bridge derives potential revenue losses and optimization options from this and prepares the results as argumentation aids for negotiations with the grid operator LEW.

By combining grid analysis, stochastic forecasting, and economic evaluation, a holistic picture emerges of the actual burden the project faces due to grid-related constraints. The differentiated risk assessment shows under which conditions the battery storage system remains economically viable. The exploration of FCA options delivers concrete recommendations for enhancing grid connection flexibility. Overall, the project enables ju:niz to bring forward well-founded regulatory and technical arguments in discussions with the grid operator, to robustly assess project economics, and to identify optimization potentials at an early stage.
