The fast and efficient connection of generation plants to the electricity grid is a basic prerequisite for the successful implementation of projects in the renewable sector. The planning and implementation times of renewable plants (especially solar parks) are much faster than the realisation of grid expansion. Accordingly, there is a system-inherent delay in the implementation of the grid expansion required by the energy transition. In addition, there are delays due to internal processes of the distribution grid operators. This is exacerbated by a heterogeneous distribution network operator landscape throughout Germany with different approaches and interfaces.
Therefore, the aim is to transparently explain the processes of the grid operators in relation to the planning of grids and grid connections for Encavis in a comprehensible way and to discuss them in a workshop. In the second phase from January 2023 onwards, E-Bridge should additionally support Encavis in a more structured and proactive approach to the grid connection processes.
At the beginning E-Bridge provided an insight into the processes of the distribution network operator grid planning and grid connection and identified opportunities for improvement. In the second phase E-Bridge provided comprehensive support to address grid issues in Encavis’ project planning and implementation to accelerate network connections and accompanies Encavis’ current project pipeline. Furthermore, internal expertise is built up at Encavis for strategic and operational challenges around grids.
Concrete recommendations for action to support the grid operator processes and thus accelerate the grid connection of generation plants in the distribution grid were identified. Based on this Encavis’ internal processes around grid connection was improved to speed up grid connection processes together with distribution system operators based on a new concept which considers a assessment of the impact of the current and future grid situation under application of Encavis’ business model. Additionally, lobbying and managing public interest was improved.
