The European Transmission System Operators (TSOs) have been working together for several years to establish an integrated European balancing market. A key role is played by the MARI (Manually Activated Reserves Initiative) and PICASSO (Platform for the International Coordination of Automated Frequency Restoration and Stable System Operation) platforms, which enable the cross-border exchange of balancing energy from manual and automatic frequency restoration reserves.
E-Bridge supports Europe’s TSOs with an experienced Project Management Office (PMO) and dedicated technical expertise throughout the implementation, further development and operation of these platforms. Today, MARI and PICASSO form the backbone of the European balancing energy exchange and make a significant contribution to a secure, efficient and resilient electricity supply across Europe.
More than four years after their go-live, both platforms continue to expand steadily. An increasing number of TSOs are joining and using the common marketplaces for the cross-border exchange of balancing energy.
On 28 October, ENTSO-E will host a webinar providing insights into the latest developments of the European Balancing Platforms. The agenda includes operational experiences, key milestones achieved to date, and the upcoming integration of additional TSOs.
