The energy transition is entering a new phase. While the expansion of renewable energy remains a key prerequisite, topics such as system integration, flexibility and grid capacity are becoming increasingly important.
These challenges were the focus of a discussion between Dr. Henning Schuster, Managing Director of E-Bridge, and Dr. Andreas Kießling, Head of Politics & Executive Office at Bayernwerk AG, in the first episode of the Bayernwerk energy policy podcast “Energie.Etappe”.
The conversation explored topics including the growing reality of the Flower.Power energy world, the further development of the regulatory framework for grid connections, and the role of grids and storage facilities in an increasingly renewable energy system. Particular attention was given to the question of how scarce grid connection capacities can be allocated fairly and efficiently in the future and which regulatory adjustments are needed to achieve this.
One key message emerged clearly: the success of the energy transition will not depend solely on the continued rollout of renewable energy. It will increasingly be determined by how effectively generation, consumption, storage and grid infrastructure interact. New sources of electricity demand, such as data centres, together with rising requirements for flexibility and security of supply, further underline the importance of an integrated energy system.
As a result, the energy transition is becoming less a question of expansion alone and increasingly a matter of system integration, efficiency and resilience. Reliable regulatory frameworks that encourage investment while enabling the efficient use of existing infrastructure will therefore be essential.
We would like to thank the team at Bayernwerk, especially Dr. Andreas Kießling and Adele Schweiger, for the invitation and the insightful discussion.

Dr. Andreas Kießling and Dr. Henning Schuster
