Northvolt is planning to build a gigafactory for battery production in Heide / Schleswig-Holstein. In the target state, batteries with a capacity of more than 60 GWh will be produced there. The region of Schleswig-Holstein has a high oversupply of renewable energies. Year after year, high amounts of renewable energy feed-in have to be curtailed because the corresponding consumption load is missing. The battery factory thus effectively relieves the power grid, which should be rewarded accordingly by the grid operator. Furthermore, the battery production can show flexibility in the power supply in the future, at the location a self-supply with photovoltaics as well as the operation of own battery storage is planned.

The task now was to develop an electricity grid connection for the battery factory that can be implemented in a timely manner, that reliably supplies the high electricity demand, that is as cost-effective as possible, and that honors the grid-relieving effect and enables future development. For this purpose, concepts for connecting the Northvolt Gigafactory in Heide to the grid were developed and evaluated.

The objective of the support was to ensure an efficient and future-proof grid connection of the Northvolt Gigafactory Heide through technical, legal and regulatory expertise of E-Bridge.
