Lack of available grid connection capacity is currently one of the key challenges of the energy transition. Grid operators, project developers, storage operators and industrial companies are facing the task of aligning growing connection demand with the available capacity of the electricity grid.

The FGE Conference 2026, taking place on 17 and 18 September in Aachen, addresses these challenges and brings together experts from the energy industry, academia, regulatory authorities and the start-up community. The conference will focus on current developments and solution approaches for transforming the energy system towards climate neutrality.

We are particularly pleased that our Managing Director, Dr. Henning Schuster, will moderate the session “Grid Connections – Bottleneck of the Energy Transition?”. The discussion will explore current challenges and future perspectives for grid connections in both the transmission and distribution networks.

Among the experts providing valuable insights are:

  • Dr. Klaus von Sengbusch, Head of Strategic Grid Planning at 50Hertz Transmission GmbH, with the presentation “Grid Connections in the Transmission Network – Challenges and Opportunities”
  • Lisa Hebenstreit, Managing Director for Grid Technology at Schleswig-Holstein Netz GmbH, with the contribution “New Rules of the Energy Transition in Distribution Networks”
  • Dr. Theodor Borsche, Managing Director of VPI FlexKraft GmbH, with the presentation “Battery Storage and Grids: A Developer’s Perspective”

The event provides a platform for discussing current challenges in grid expansion, regulatory frameworks, and the integration of new flexible generation and consumption assets.
