In the first application round of the maturity assessment process for grid connection capacities in the transmission network, E-Bridge Consulting supported several project developers with grid connection requests involving different combinations of renewable generation assets, battery storage systems, and data centres.
Well-prepared process overall
From E-Bridge’s perspective, the process was very well prepared overall. In particular, the comprehensive and regularly updated FAQ documents helped address practical questions in a timely manner. At the same time, it became clear that project-specific characteristics and individual constellations cannot be fully standardised.
Strong demand for transmission grid connection capacity
The high number of submitted grid connection requests highlights the continued strong demand for connection capacity in the transmission network. With the application phase now completed, attention turns to the evaluation of the applications. Of particular interest will be how TSOs handle inconsistencies, which opportunities for revisions may be granted, and how projects are ultimately scored and prioritised.
Opportunities for further development of the process
For future application rounds, additional information on available switchgear bays as well as internal and external grid expansion constraints could further enhance transparency. In addition, the centralised identification of flexible residual capacities and their integration into the maturity assessment process offer potential for further development of the current approach.
E-Bridge is pleased to contribute the experience gained from the first application round to the future development of the process and continues to support project developers with questions relating to grid connection procedures and capacity allocation.
