As a municipal company, Stadtwerke Bielefeld supplies its customers reliably and safely with electricity, gas, water and district heating. Through five subsidiaries, Stadtwerke supplies the people of Bielefeld and local businesses with a wide range of products and services for urban mobility and infrastructure. In order to strengthen the company’s role in a sustainable and low-emission energy system, Stadtwerke Bielefeld is examining the prerequisites and requirements for the possible future use of hydrogen in the heating and industrial sectors.

In the first step, the national and international developments of the hydrogen economy were presented and the national H2 strategy was placed in the international context. In addition to an estimation of the H2 cost development, the framework conditions and prerequisites for a demand for hydrogen in the supply area of SW Bielefeld were identified and investigated. In the context of this investigation and a workshop with the customer, a guideline for action and documentation of the results has been developed.

Based on the expected development of the hydrogen economy, in particular the costs for green hydrogen production, and the framework conditions required for SW Bielefeld, a guideline with evaluated and recommended options for action was developed. Based on this guideline, the client can further elaborate its hydrogen strategy for the integration of hydrogen into the municipal heat and industrial supply.
