The expansion of the electricity grid remains a key prerequisite for the energy transition. At the same time, progress in many areas is not keeping pace with the growing requirements for security of supply. This was one of the key conclusions of this year’s Security of Supply Conference hosted by Amprion.

E-Bridge was represented on site by Managing Director Tuncay Türkucar, Gerald Blumberg (Head of Energy Markets), and TSO experts Max Lauer and Christoph Zöll. Discussions with grid operators, market participants, and policymakers made one thing clear: the key challenges have been identified — now the focus must shift to consistent implementation.

The discussions centered in particular on the planned Electricity Peak Load Compensation Act (StromVKG), the role of capacity markets in ensuring firm capacity, and the opportunities arising from a stronger European integration of such market mechanisms. Participants also highlighted the need to better align grid and market processes operationally in order to safeguard security of supply in the long term.

For Tuncay Türkucar, one thing is clear:

“Security of supply is a fundamental prerequisite for economic stability and the success of the energy transition. Especially in a phase of increasing system complexity, we should take a more European approach to capacity markets and continue to develop them accordingly.”

Gerald Blumberg adds:

“We also need timely adjustments to the operational processes and rules governing the interaction between grids and markets, enabling battery storage systems, for example, to be reliably integrated into grid operations while remaining as market-oriented as possible.”

Our conclusion: Security of supply will not be ensured by grid expansion alone. The next implementation steps are now crucial — from intelligent system integration and the further development of market mechanisms to a close coordination between grid and market operations.

We would like to thank Amprion for a successful event and for the open exchange on one of the most important topics of the energy transition.
