How can electricity markets be designed to better reflect the physical realities of power grids? This question was at the center of discussions among experts from academia and industry at the 22nd International Conference on the European Energy Market (EEM26) in Trondheim.
Our Managing Director Pieter Schavemaker was invited as a keynote speaker and participated in the plenary session “Grid meets market: Power market design for physical laws” at the Norwegian University of Science and Technology (NTNU). Together with Jan Hystad and Mette Helene Bjørndal, and moderated by Irina Oleinikova, he discussed how market design can evolve in response to an increasingly complex energy system shaped by the growing integration of renewable energy sources.
The discussion focused on how market mechanisms can better account for physical grid constraints and thereby support the secure and efficient integration of renewable energy. It highlighted the importance of close collaboration between academia, market participants, and grid operators in shaping the future of Europe’s energy system.
Particularly noteworthy were the open and constructive exchange between theory and practice, as well as the many conversations beyond the conference stage, which underscored the high relevance of the topic.
Prior to the conference, Pieter Schavemaker was also actively engaged at NTNU. As part of his annual guest lecture in the course “Power Markets, Resources and Environment” and during the Energy Transition Week (ETW26), he exchanged ideas with students and industry professionals on current developments in the energy sector.
