After the guarantee of energy supply security in the gas and electricity sector for the winter of 2022/23 could be consistently achieved with a variety of short-term measures, the focus turns to the winter of 2023/24. On behalf of our client Bavarian Ministry of Economic Affairs, Regional Development and Energy, Leona Jovy, Baris Özalay, Gerald Blumberg and Philipp Heuser of E-Bridge Consulting have prepared an analysis on the relevant drivers for supply security in the winter of 2023/24 in southern Germany.

As a result, there is a need for an extension of the nuclear power plant stretch and an increased market return of coal-fired power plants to secure the energy supply in the coming winter. In addition, further stress tests by German transmission system operators are needed in the short term to address a potential tightening of conditions in the winter of 2023/24.
