Last week, E-Bridge Consulting welcomed a delegation from Korea Electric Power Corporation (KEPCO) for a three-day training programme delivered by the E-Bridge Academy. The workshop focused on Germany’s planning and permitting process for transmission grid expansion – a topic that is becoming increasingly relevant in many countries as they advance their energy transition efforts.
Together with our Managing Director Tuncay Türkucar and our Head of Transmission System Operators, Dr. Baris Özalay, participants explored a key question: How can long-term grid expansion requirements be translated into infrastructure projects that are both legally robust and broadly accepted by society?
Over the course of the training, participants examined the fundamentals of strategic grid planning in Germany, the roles of regulatory authorities, transmission system operators, and other key stakeholders, as well as the various stages of the planning and approval process. The agenda also covered technical alternatives such as high-voltage direct current (HVDC) transmission, underground cabling, and grid optimisation measures. Another focus area was public and stakeholder engagement, including lessons learned and best practices that may support the further development of comparable processes in Korea.
We would like to thank the KEPCO delegation for the engaging discussions, insightful questions, and strong interest in Germany’s experience with grid expansion. The exchange once again demonstrated that grid expansion is far more than a technical challenge: successful projects require a balanced combination of effective governance, transparency, and professional stakeholder management.
Following the training, the delegation continued its study tour with visits to Amprion and 50Hertz. These visits focused on practical experience with public participation, stakeholder acceptance, and compensation models for large-scale transmission grid projects.
