The RED III Directive was adopted more than 12 months ago. Since then, the BMWK, VDA and BDEW have been working intensively on its implementation. At the second summit of the European industry coalition, grid operators, representatives of the flex industry and the BMWK recently came together to discuss the current status. The final decisions were postponed until mid-2025, but concrete results are still pending.
E-Bridge is committed to making practical and progressive use of the already emerging potential of vehicle-to-grid (V2G) through targeted incentives for the market and the right tools for grid operators. This includes:
- Creating the conditions in the grid by implementing Section 14a: The successful implementation of Section 14a is a prerequisite for successful integration. It must be examined whether an additional limitation of the withdrawal capacity will be necessary from 2028 in order to enable V2G.
- Improving coordination with the market: As a preventative information tool, the envelope curve concept can specifically limit the need for controls through Section 14a and thus increase efficiency. In a study with TransnetBW, TenneT, E.ON and Amprion, we have already laid the foundations for a pilot project (link in the comments).
- Utilization of the potential also for grid-serving purposes at higher voltage levels: The additional potential of V2G can also be tapped for grid-serving purposes at higher voltage levels through complementary market-based redispatch and further increase the attractiveness of V2G for the market (more on this can also be found in the above-mentioned study).
- Removal of regulatory barriers for V2G: The integration of electric cars into the market requires an adjustment of grid fees.
We look forward to further discussions and to being able to contribute our expertise at the interface between the grid and the market in relation to Section 14a, grid charges and tariff design as well as grid-friendly congestion management.
